ABOUT DEPARTMENT

The Department Mechanical Engineering was one of the major branches started when Visakha Institute of Engineering and Technology (VIET) college of Engineering was established in 2008. The Department of Mechanical Engineering was established In the year 2011 with an intake of 60, later on intake of 240 in the A.Y: 2014 and from Academic Year 2023 – 2024 intake of 120, the department has seen lot of progress in academics, research and consultancy activities. The department offers two PG course namely M.Tech in CAD/CAM and Thermal Engineering started in the year 2020 with an intake of each 18. The Department is accredited by NAAC with “A” Grade. Both students and faculty are encouraged to enhance their knowledge level through enrolment of NPTEL courses. The department also has Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with various Industry Research Organizations and good no: of paper publications, patents, book/book chapters. The academic quality of the department is reflected by the opportunities won by the students and the distinguished positions in industry and academia occupied by alumni.

The department strives to upgrade the knowledge of faculty and students by organizing various Workshops, Industry-Institute Interactions, Continuous Improvement Programs inviting eminent personalities from Industry and academic Institutions, Seminars and Research activities. Students are provided internship programs in various power plants and industries like VIZAG DOCK YARD, HPCL, GMR, GVK, VPT, Vizag steel plant, , APSRTC etc.

The department has well equipped laboratories such as Workshop laboratory, Fluid Mechanics Laboratory, Strength of Materials laboratory, Instrumentation laboratory, Metallurgy Laboratory, CAD Simulation laboratory, Thermal engineering laboratory, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning laboratory

The vision of the Department of Mechanical Engineering is to be Regionally, Nationally and Internationally recognized in providing mechanical engineering education, leading to well qualified engineers who are innovative, immediate contributors to their profession and successful in advanced studies.

The mission of the Department of Mechanical Engineering is to educate, prepare, inspire, and mentor students to excel as professionals and to grow throughout their careers in the art, science, and responsibilities of engineering

HOD ABOUT

Dr.D.Santha Rao has been working as a Professor and Head of Mechanical Engineering.He is holding Dean Academics of the college, He has about 24 years of teaching experience and obtained B.Tech from Andhra University, M.Tech. from NIT Tiruchirappalli (Formally called as REC) and PhD from Andhra University in the Friction stir processing of aluminium alloys.He has published 33 research papers in Scopus /SCI/WOS/UGC care list peer reviewed journals and also published 05 Patents publications,One design patent, 05 books & 02 Book chapters. He has received 02 best paper awards in international conferences conducted by NIT and University and MHRD stipend during PG Program.He has guided 18 + projects for M Tech and 38+ projects in UG level and supervisor for PhD Scholars. His areas of research includes Composites, FSW,FSP and Optimisation techniques.He is an active member of ISTE and IWS.

HOD MESSAGE

Mechanical Engineering is a versatile and evergreen branch of engineering .It is a distinct honour for me to serve as Head for Mechanical Engineering Department. The department started its journey in the year 2009. There are two UG programmes & 2 PG at present (i) B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering (ii) B.Tech in Automobile Engineering (iii) M.Tech in CAD/CAM &Thermal Engineering. Our department has a team of highly qualified and experienced faculty with 4 Doctorates and, good infra-structure and lab facilities. We are striving hard continuously to improve upon the quality of education and to maintain its position of leadership in engineering and technology. Our department has been conducting seminars, conferences and certification courses to keep the faculty and students in a row with the latest developments in the field of technical education. We are happy to share that many students are pursuing higher studies in leading universities in India and abroad. Students of mechanical engineering can aspire to locate themselves in various organizations dealing with Automobile, Design, Manufacturing, Aviation, Defence, and Power sector, Oil and Gas, Aviation, Railways, Space, Shipping, Metallurgy, Pharmaceuticals, Mining etc. The students are driven to train in various fields of Mechanical engineering like CAD, CAM, Robotics, and Welding

The graduate of mechanical engineering will be able to:

  1. Engineering knowledge: Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals to solve complex mechanical engineering problems.
  2. Problem Analysis: Attain the capability to identify, formulate and analyse problems related to mechanical engineering
  3. Design/Development of Solutions: : Design solutions for mechanical system components and processes that meet the specified needs with appropriate consideration for public health and safety.

After 4 years of graduation, the graduate shall be able to
  • PEO 1: To prepare graduates with a solid foundation in engineering, Science and Technology for a successful career in Mechanical Engineering
  • PEO 2: To prepare graduates to become effective collaborators/ innovators in effects to address social, technical and engineering challenges
  • PEO 3: To prepare graduates to get employment in industries or pursue higher studies or research assignments or turn as entrepreneurs and also with good communications skills, leadership skills, professional, ethical and social responsibilities.
